Lobster Red
Describing this pixel painting the artist vacillates from talking art versus food versus nature. She ends up with a piece abstract enough to be evocative of all three. Lovely says, “I start with the darkest darks and from there start seeing the matrix.” Using broken color, and relying on the “timing of the viewer understanding how to interpret pixels,” Lovely directs an experience where she hopes the audience can not only “see the form but also almost taste the goodness. I always wanted to paint a lobster – such a rich delicacy deserves a painting – and I wanted it to be a painting that feels like summertime.” This was the outcome, selecting a large, male (larger claws for bolder, bulkier imagery), Maine lobster, delivered through a compositional theory that allows her to create through the juxtaposition of “pixelated” color blocks.
