The Little Discoverer
This little discoverer has several nuanced and symbolic overlaps with Lovely’s painting “I See God.” With similar color of suit and blond hair, the viewer can almost imagine the subjects related or different points of a single life, though not the artist’s original intention. While one discovers in the sky, the other turns to the ground. “The beauty of this little girl,” Lovely says, “is she’s telling you a story. ‘Look what I’ve found – life’ as she’s searching the ecosystem of the tidepools.” Lovely acknowledges her compositional structure choices, with the subject’s body forming a triangle overlapping all background layers, and set among the broken colors of red sand and warmer shadows in the foreground, “There are loose moments of red, then the purple – blue and red together – cools it,” Lovely teaches as she rolls poetically back into the symbolism of the setting saying, “Nothing was prepared. This is honest, organic – she is part of nature, holding a bucket (not a sailboat as the boys have in their paintings but a bucket to gather showing the general nature of women), and one that can hold all her discoveries.” Literal or figurative.
