“Painting from Life,” the artist created this broad stroke rendering of the 2004 Memorial Day community ceremony at Shelter Cove on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. Taking on the challenge of painting a fast moving, short-lived scene, Lovely explains her expression on canvas was a blend of observing the event and praying for the people present as well as the beloved service men and women remembered and celebrated. The patriotic palette of deep reds and blues, while characteristic of the holiday, also aligns with tones frequently paired in Lovely’s bolder pieces.
