Four O’Clock Milk
In the artist’s own words this painting was the result of a desire to “go back to what I know” and paint a familiar spot near her childhood home in Vermont. In her prolific collection, Lovely has periodically captured what she fondly refers to as “our Spencer Hollow Meadow.” In different pieces she captures it in twilight or in spring in her first award-winning painting. Here she tilts the lens down the cold winter brook where, through the morning snowfall, we see all the lights on in the barns for the 4 a.m. milking on the farm. More than a literal detail Lovely says this depicts a culture and a feel of her hometown. The original was sold to a patron who then donated it to a museum in Rockland, Maine.
