Good and Plenty Marilyn
oil on canvas
16x11
2001
The moment we stop sex, love and beauty, we have stopped
life. Sex, love and beauty, Marilyn had plenty of it. And it’s lasting.
Imagine being a woman attracting the President of the United States when his
First Lady was the most popular woman in the world.
It is about a woman in great contrast to the country that
attacked us September 11, 2001. A country that veils and forbids its women
education, as this woman is a product of our free democratic society.
It’s no secret how to make a material attraction but it is
the first thing you learn in The Boston School. The secret is to look for the
biggest, simplest shape, like a triangle. Marilyn's head and shoulders create
the triangle. She took this shape, making herself up and shared it, so everyone
could remember Marilyn.
Andy Warhol’s “Orange Marilyn” is number two on the
contemporary auction block today, just behind Jasper Johns’ “Flag”. If we take
these two original works that society has created on the auction block it says a
lot about our society today. These two original works of art deserve to be
called the social art of the day. The social art of today is about democracy
and women. Our society insures life with priorities on democracy and woman.
The Statue of Liberty seals the envelope.
“Good and Plenty Marilyn” is a work by Candace Whittemore
Lovely which is a personification of herself being Marilyn.

Good and Plenty Ross
oil on canvas 38x50 2001
We believe, a spirit protects us. Materialistically we
reveal our spirit with a flag. After September 11, 2001 the nation discovered
everyone wanted a flag. America was showing her spirit.
Jasper Johns’ “Flag” is number one on the contemporary
auction block today. Discovering this before 9/11, I created a show, “Good and
Plenty Candace Lovely”, to explain what are attractions. The flag then became
“Good and Plenty Ross” to teach people that the flag is an attraction probably
bigger than you think. Now that we have experienced all of the events from
9/11, nature has once again remained the educator. If I tell you now, that a
flag is a big attraction to life, you can only agree.
As far as concluding that opposites attract, the attraction
here is the spirit and the material. Jasper Johns’ “Flag” has only sealed the
envelope.
“Good and Plenty Ross” is a work by Candace Whittemore
Lovely which was inspired by Jasper Johns’ work “Flag”.
